Miss Ellen’s Sewing Class - Lesson No. 5 by - Ellen Mason - JOY Designs Supplies: Felt, cut into 5" squares - assorted colors Embroidery threads - assorted colors Narrow ribbon - color your choice Bobbin thread Stabilizer - Tear Away Sewing machine - embroidery unit and accessories Basic sewing kit Downloaded designs Method: (NOTE: If your machine does not recogonize the AutoStop, then you must manually stop the stitching ---- See No. 8 below) 1. Set up machine/embroidery unit for embroidery. 2. Insert floppy/card with downloaded designs into the machine. 3. Hoop one layer of Tear Away. 4. Attach hoop with Tear Away to the machine. 5. Lay one piece of felt on top of hooped Tear Away but under the pressure foot. 6. Stitch a baste stitch if your machine has a built in stitch. 7. Select design. 8. After stitching the inside circle, carefully remove hoop from machine - DO NOT TURN MACHINE OFF - DO NOT REMOVE FELT FROM HOOP. Cut out the inside of the felt circle. 9. Re-attach the hoop to the embroidery unit. 10. Place another small piece of stabilizer underneath the stitching area. 11. Stitch the satin circle area. 12. Stop machine and place another piece of felt underneath the hoop and a piece of Tear Away under that piece of felt. 13. Complete stitching the design. Cut all jump stitch threads. 14. Un-hoop and apply a seam sealant to the underneath edges, let dry then trim away the excess felt and stabilizer. 15. With a large eye needle and narrow ribbon, insert enough ribbon through the top of ornament for a hanging loop. 16. With small sharp scissors, cut a slit in the back to insert a small picture — hand stitch the slit together. EMJOY! 12/03 |
